How to Talk to Your Board About Investing in AI

As AI becomes more common in healthcare and senior living, leadership teams are starting to hear the question, "What’s our AI strategy?" For many senior living organizations, that question can feel a little early or even overwhelming. The conversation is coming, and it’s important to be ready to talk about it in a way that makes sense.

Here’s how to talk to your board about AI in a way that feels real, grounded in your mission, and focused on smart decisions.

1. Start with the Why

Before diving into any tech talk, keep the focus on why this matters in the first place. AI isn't about robots or replacing jobs. It's about helping your team work smarter, improving safety, and making life better for residents and staff.

Key message: "We’re looking at how AI could help us meet our goals and support the people who live and work in our community."

2. Explain What AI Actually Means for You

Some board members might picture AI like something out of a sci-fi movie. Bring it back down to earth with real examples that make sense for senior living:

  • Automating scheduling or billing tasks

  • Predicting fall risk or health changes

  • Making reports faster and more accurate

  • Helping staff spend less time on paperwork

Tip: Use examples based on problems your board already knows about.

3. Be Honest About Where You Are Now

Talking about what you can’t do yet helps build trust. Mention the gaps that might need work before jumping into any AI tools, like data quality and disconnected business systems.

Key message: "Before we commit to anything, we need to understand where we’re starting from and what we’re ready for."

4. Suggest a Smart First Step

Instead of pitching a specific AI product, recommend starting with an AI Readiness Assessment. It's low-risk, helpful, and gives you a full picture before making any big decisions.

What’s included:

  • A readiness score for each department

  • A list of realistic AI use cases

  • A look at how your current systems stack up

  • Compliance and data risk insights

  • A 3-year roadmap that fits your budget and goals

5. Keep It Strategic, Not Flashy

Boards respect thoughtful planning. Let them know this isn’t about jumping on trends. It’s about preparing your organization to take advantage of the right opportunities when the time is right.

Key message: "We want to get our systems, processes, and people ready so we can use AI in ways that actually make sense for us."

Keep It Clear and Simple

Talking about AI doesn’t have to be technical or overwhelming. When you focus on strategy, outcomes, and real next steps, you can lead a conversation your board will understand and appreciate.
