Getting Around with Google Maps
Whether you're trying to find a new restaurant, visit a friend’s house, or just want to know where you are, Google Maps can be a helpful tool.
What Is Google Maps?
Google Maps is a free app that shows you maps and directions right on your smartphone. It can help you:
Find nearby businesses like pharmacies, gas stations, or coffee shops
Look up addresses and see exactly how to get there
Get turn-by-turn directions whether you’re driving, walking, or taking public transit
Explore in 3D using Street View, which shows you real photos of what places look like from the ground
How to Get Started
If you don’t have Google Maps yet, you can find it in your phone’s app store:
iPhone users: open the App Store, search “Google Maps,” and tap Download
Android users: open the Play Store, search “Google Maps,” and tap Install
Once it’s installed, you’ll see a map of your current location. At the top is a search bar. This is where you can type in an address, business name, or even something general like “pizza near me.”
Getting Directions
After typing in your destination, tap “Directions.”
Choose how you’re traveling—by car, walking, bike, or bus. Then press “Start.”
The app will show your route and speak the directions aloud as you move. A blue dot shows where you are on the map in real time.
You can zoom in or out using two fingers, and the screen will rotate to help guide you the right way.
What’s Street View?
If you want to see what a building or street looks like before you go, Google Maps offers Street View. Tap and hold on a spot, then select the little photo that appears in the corner. You’ll see a full 360-degree image of the area, like you’re standing right there.
Tips for a Better Experience
Make sure your phone’s location (GPS) is turned on
Use a car mount if you’re driving, so you can follow directions safely
Zoom in to read street names and landmarks more clearly
Always double-check the route to make sure it makes sense for you
