Getting Started with Uber
Technology is constantly evolving and for many older adults, one of the biggest changes has been how we get from place to place. If you've ever felt unsure about ride-sharing apps or wanted to try Uber but didn’t know where to start, you're not alone. We created this blog post to walk you through it step by step, in plain language, with your needs in mind.
What Is Uber?
Think of Uber as a modern-day taxi service that works through an app on your smartphone. With just a few taps, you can request a ride, see how much it will cost, and get picked up right at your front door. Uber is available almost everywhere and works on most mobile devices including iPhones, Android phones, and even phones like Jitterbug.
Why Choose Uber?
Convenience: No need to call a cab company, just open the app.
Safety: You’ll always know the name of your driver, the type of car, and license plate before they arrive.
Flexibility: Use it for doctor’s appointments, grocery trips, or even social outings.
Uber tends to be more popular than some alternatives (like Lyft), which often means more drivers are available, especially in larger cities or busy areas.
Step 1: Download the Uber App
Depending on what kind of phone you have:
iPhone: Go to the App Store.
Android: Open the Google Play Store.
Search for “Uber” and tap Download, Install, or Get. You may be asked to enter a password linked to your phone (your Apple ID or Google Account).
Step 2: Set Up Your Account
Once the app is downloaded, open it. You’ll be asked to sign up. You can do this with your:
Phone number (recommended)
Email
Google account
Apple ID (for iPhone users)
We recommend using your phone number because it makes it easier for drivers to call you if they can’t find your pickup location.
Step 3: Verify Your Info
After signing up, you’ll receive a code by text or email. Enter that code into the app to verify your account. You’ll then enter your name and agree to Uber’s terms and conditions.
You can also choose to set up extra security, like a passcode or facial recognition, if you want.
Step 4: Add a Payment Method
Before you can take your first ride, you’ll need to enter a payment method. You can use:
A debit card
A credit card
Apple Pay or Google Pay (if set up)
Uber charges your payment method automatically after the ride, no need to handle cash.
Step 5: Booking Your First Ride
When you’re ready to go somewhere:
Open the Uber app.
Type in your destination.
Choose your ride type (UberX is the most common).
Confirm your pickup location.
Tap Confirm and wait for a driver.
You’ll see the driver’s name, picture, car model, and license plate (make sure it matches before getting in.)
Safety Tips
Always check the license plate and driver info before getting in.
If needed, you can contact the driver directly through the app.
Share your trip details with a friend or family member if you want extra peace of mind.
Final Thoughts
Learning something new can feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Uber can be a safe, affordable, and incredibly helpful way to stay independent and mobile. Whether you're heading to a doctor’s appointment or just want to meet a friend for lunch, Uber is here to help you get there.
